Mt. Adir

This week I visited some very interesting sites. On Mt. Adir in the upper Galilee a very impressive and moving observation point was built commemorating the second Lebanese war. The names of all the fallen soldiers are engraved on a plague along with the story of the battles that took place at the villages seen from the lookout.

One of the fallen soldiers, Michael Levin, was a "lone soldier" from Philadelphia. The Birthright project incorporates within its two day visit in Israel a tour of Mt. Herzl including Michael's grave and tells about his life's story. On one such Birthright trip, Max Steinberg participated and upon learning of Michael Levin decided that he too would become a "lone soldier". On the last Gaza campaign, Max too fell in battle and was buried on Mt. Herzl. Taglit decided to honor Max's memory by carrying out a restoration project at the site of the ancient synagogue on the Arbel overlooking Tiberius. As a result of this project the access to the synagogue has been greatly improved
